Holidays and folk signs
Every nation from time immemorial has traditions of holidays and celebrations , filled with sacred essence and tied to important events in people's lives. The Slavs are no exception here, because from time immemorial, long before the baptism of Rus and the advent of Christianity, ancient powerful gods and natural phenomena were revered here.
The most important thing was to live in harmony with Mother Nature, to observe her rules and hope for mercy. The so-called Kologod – the four seasons – was marked by important dates: two solstices and two equinoxes, and they were celebrated with certain ritual actions.
The arrival of the Christian religion to our lands changed a lot, however, despite the constant persecution of paganism and all sorts of prohibitions to conduct folk fortune telling and rituals, the people did not forget their ancient beliefs and their roots. Over time, they imperceptibly wove into Orthodox holidays and became so organic that now no one can say with complete certainty what was there from time immemorial and what was invented in the process to soften the new, unfamiliar tradition.
Indeed, who can imagine the holiday of Christmas and January Christmastide without fortune telling about the betrothed , and Bright Easter without Easter cakes and painted eggs. For example, the day of Agrafena Kupalnitsa was combined with the pagan Rusalnaya Week and included mandatory bathing in the river, and the ancient holiday of Rozhenitsy on September 21 (September 8, old style) "coincided" with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
Holidays, depending on whether they fall on a fixed day of the month or the date of their celebration changes from year to year, are divided into fixed (non-moving) and movable (moving).
